OK I am now back at work and am able to work on this computer again, I reflashed the BIOS to the A04 release then put a bootable floppy in and the system started up, but if I start the computer without it it comes up with that error message. I am going to try and reformat the HDD and install windows again to see if it will work.

I'm going to use WinPhlash which is what Sony uses to flash the BIOS.
Sony releases a .EXE file. But this is really just an archive, you can look inside it and it says WinPhlash. You can extract the archive and run WinPhlash from their file.
I know somebody with the original BIOS on their machine and I have the utility that Sony uses to flash their systems, although the version I have is the full version that can BACKUP a BIOS.
Sony's version is modified so that it only flashes.

Ugh... Hello. I recently bought a memory thing (PC133 128mb RAM), put it into the computer, but the thing doesn't work. I have this Compac Presario AMD-K6 500mhz with 64mb RAM and a stupid thing that uses 8mb of RAM for something else. When I start the computer, there's this counter the counts (I think) RAM stuff, but when it reaches 119mb, the screens turns white... I've managed to pass this and logged in, but when window's about to load, the computer crashes... help...
Please explain: won't boot.
