XP supports bigger HDD starting with SP1 but you should upgrade to SP2 ASAP because of lots of security updates. It's better to download SP2 prior to your fesh install (burn it on CD) as going only with SP1 is rather risky.
All you have to do is to create a HDD partition within your Bios limits and allocate space above 128/137GB if you finished your Windows installation and patching.

Yes, that is also a good practice. You can write a short Bash script to automate that kind of thing. See if any of you can come up with a one or two line bash script called snap, snapshot, BackupFiles, or foo.bash, that takes one or more arguments, and COPIES the list of files to the same base filename, appended by the current date and time. Very easy to write. You can probably find one out there on the net. If you are having trouble, I can help you.
If you can get into SETUP, load safe defaults.

Your board has probably 128KB Flash ROM - check what's printed on the chip (remove Award sticker if it's there). If the number ends in 010 then it's 128KB, if 020 then it's 256KB.
What's your BIOS ID? FIC has 115MC135 128KB BIOS "01/19/2001-i440BX-2A69KF09C-00" here ftp://ftp.fic.com.tw/bios/motherboards/slot1/vb-601/115mc135.zip
